THE CONTRIBUTION OF THE ROMAN WORLD

1) Pragmatism

The Romans always favor the practical aspect of life and social organization. They were never intellectuals, like the Greeks.
Building systems or develop theories was far from their mentality. They loved to grapple with the great problems of the structural organization of society. Building bridges, roads, public buildings, water systems, which improve the quality of life, were issues that attracted them.

With the Romans, we can say that the planning has started: the growth of the urban area according to a plan that takes into account global overview of all activities (cultural, social, ricreativa, funzionale) che la città è chiamata a svolgere sul territorio.

The interpretation of the law and procedure are the two elements that have distinguished the Roman justice from the beginning.

The law alone was not sufficient to judge a case in court. It should be understood for its proper implementation. And this interpretation was not only entrusted to the court. There were people, the jurists, whose auctoritas in the interpretation of the law was universally recognized and their opinion was solicited by the judges.

This is the origin of modern jurisprudence.
